Interview: Carlo Morasso Discusses Spectra-BREAST Project

In a recent interview with DEEPSYNC, the heart of European scientific innovation within the EIC Communities project, Carlo Morasso, the coordinator of the Spectra-BREAST project, shared his insights on the impact and challenges of the initiative, which aims to transform breast cancer surgery. Morasso, Head of Laboratory at Istituti Clinici Scientifici Maugeri (ICS Maugeri), emphasized the critical need the project is addressing. Reducing reoperation rates would mean reducing a major source of stress for patients and improving their quality of life.”

He also reflected on the journey of bringing the project to life, particularly the importance of collaboration. Scientific progress is not a single-person effort, collaboration is key,” he noted. Morasso discussed the challenges of integrating advanced technologies like optical spectroscopies, AI, and robotics into a usable surgical tool, but he remains optimistic. In the long term, I imagine tools like Spectra-BREAST becoming part of everyday surgical practice, much as endoscopy and robotic surgery are today.”

As the project progresses, the team is now focused on testing the device in more realistic surgical scenarios. The goal is to provide surgeons with real-time feedback, ensuring that cancer cells are fully removed during surgery, with minimal impact on healthy tissue.
