New Publication: Expert Consensus on Breast Surgery

The Istituti Clinici Scientifici Maugeri (ICSM), coordinator of the Spectra-BREAST project, has published a peer-reviewed article in the international journal BJS Open, presenting an expert consensus on current clinical practice and innovation needs in the field of breast-conserving surgery.

Article title:
Comparative effectiveness of preoperative localization techniques for non-palpable breast lesions: multicentre real-world study
BJS Open, Volume 10, February 2026
DOI: 10.1093/bjsopen/zraf153

This work brings together a panel of international experts to define the state of the art in surgical margin assessment and identify the main clinical and technological challenges that still hinder optimal treatment outcomes. The consensus outlines the need for real-time, accurate intraoperative tools, which is precisely the focus of the Spectra-BREAST project.

The article represents an important scientific contribution to the Spectra-BREAST mission, which aims to develop an integrated platform based on hyperspectral imaging and Raman spectroscopy for intraoperative assessment of breast tumor resection margins.

The Spectra-BREAST consortium congratulates the ICSM team and co-authors for this impactful publication, which strengthens the project’s scientific foundations and outreach.
