Spectra-BREAST Presented at R2B Innovation Fair in Bologna

26 June 2025, Bologna – Carlo Morasso, Coordinator of the Spectra-BREAST project, participated for the first time in the R2B – Research to Business International Exhibition for Research and Skills for Innovation, held in Bologna.

During this dynamic event, Dr. Morasso introduced the Spectra-BREAST EU project to a broad innovation audience. His presentation focused on the project’s mission to enhance surgical precision in breast cancer treatment through cutting-edge photonics technologies, such as multimodal hyperspectral imaging and Raman spectroscopy.

Dr. Morasso also took part in a roundtable titled “Photonics Technologies for the Bio-Medical Sector: Challenges and Perspectives.” The discussion brought together experts from diverse disciplines to explore both the obstacles and opportunities for photonics in healthcare.

Highlights from the discussion included:

  • The importance of involving clinicians early in the development process, leveraging the capabilities of Italian IRCCS institutions.

  • The demographic opportunity presented by Europe’s aging population for deploying patient-centric technologies.

  • A reflection on key technological trends—digitalization, AI, and miniaturization—and the regulatory risks posed by consumer-market shortcuts in photonics innovation.

  • Observations on the funding landscape, noting that while EU and regional support is strong, Italy could enhance its national investment in translational photonics research.

Dr. Morasso expressed gratitude to the organizers Silvia Maria Pietralunga (CNR-IFN, Milano) and Stefano Toffanin (CNR-ISMN, Bologna), and acknowledged the valuable contributions of all participants for their insights and collaborative spirit.

Stay tuned for more updates and appearances by the Spectra-BREAST consortium as we continue to share our work across Europe.
